Our History
Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church has faithfully served the Charleston community since 1861.
The congregation was organized during one of the most difficult seasons in American history. Early members gathered in faith, believing that God’s work would continue regardless of the challenges surrounding them. Shortly after its organization, the church became part of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination through Ocoee Presbytery.
Throughout more than 165 years of ministry, our church has witnessed remarkable moments in both local and national history. During the Civil War, the church building served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. As the community rebuilt, so did the congregation, continuing its ministry through changing generations.
Over the decades, Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church has constructed new places of worship, established a manse, expanded its ministry, and continually adapted to meet the needs of the community while remaining faithful to the Gospel.
Today, we honor the legacy of those who came before us while looking confidently toward the future. Their faithfulness reminds us that every generation is called to leave the church stronger for those who will follow.

What is the Cumberland Presbyterian Church?
Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church is part of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a denomination founded during the Second Great Awakening on the American frontier in 1810.
The Cumberland Presbyterian Church was born from a desire to proclaim the Gospel to everyone. Early leaders believed God’s grace is offered to all people and emphasized evangelism, discipleship, education, and compassionate ministry.
Today, Cumberland Presbyterians continue to embrace the historic Christian faith while emphasizing:
- The authority of Scripture
- Salvation through Jesus Christ alone
- God’s grace available to everyone
- The importance of personal faith and discipleship
- Compassionate service to our communities
- Shared leadership through pastors, elders, and congregations
While rooted in the Reformed tradition, Cumberland Presbyterians have long been known for combining biblical preaching with heartfelt worship, missions, and a welcoming spirit.
Our congregation is part of the Tennessee-Georgia Presbytery and joins churches across the United States and around the world in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
